Connor De Phillippi Finishes A Solid P4 In His Debut At The Famous Monaco Street Circuit

In only his second Mobil 1 Porsche Supercup race, series rookie De Phillippi just missed out on a podium, finishing P4 before a packed Formula 1 crowd on the streets of Monaco.

May 28, 2014 – SAN CLEMENTE, Calif. — It’s was only the second race of the season for the Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup Championship, but in the world of motorsports, the racing in Monte Carlo was the beginning of what is commonly known as the “greatest weekend in racing.” With Formula 1’s Monaco Grand Prix kicking off the action and ending with both the Indianapolis 500 and NASCAR’s Coca-Cola 600, it’s a weekend every racer dreams of taking part in. For Porsche Junior Connor De Phillippi, this dream came true with the opportunity to not only be there for the Monaco Grand Prix, but also race his 911 GT3 Cup car around the prestigious street circuit in the principality.

Just as the 2014 season has already proven, the competition has been as competitive as ever. With the 2.075 mile long Monaco street circuit virtually impossible to pass on, it’s imperative to qualify as close to the front if you want a chance at a podium, let alone winning this marquee event.

28 drivers, from 12 different countries gave it all they had to try and capture the top qualifying position, and in the end, De Phillippi was just 0.172 seconds short of pole position, qualifying his Förch Racing by Lukas Motorsport car in a fantastic P4 position. After the session, the young American commented, “It was a fantastic qualifying and I’m very happy with the session. It was a little crazy with the yellow flags, but the team did a great job and we managed to qualify in P4 our first time to Monaco. Now we’ll focus on Sunday and give it our best.”

Starting from P4 for Sunday’s race, De Phillippi got a clean start and held his ground entering turn 1’s very challenging Sainte Devote. As with most races on the streets of Monaco, unless you get caught up in an accident or put a wheel wrong, you’re more than likely to finish in the position you start in. With no pit stops in the Supercup series and such a competitive field of drivers, this once again proved to be the case. Much like the other top 8 drivers in the race, De Phillippi could not advance and brought home P4. Although he missed out on the podium, his first time racing at Monaco proved to be a huge success and a dream come true.

“This weekend at Monaco was great and it really hasn’t sunk in yet. We managed another clean start, kept pace with the leaders and finished as the top rookie in the race. I think we can be very happy with our finish and it will help motivate us to work hard and look to improve in the upcoming races.”

“I have to give a huge thank you to the whole FÖRCH Racing by Lukas Motorsport team, Porsche Motosport and my partners, Jorg Gray, McKenna Porsche, Oakley, Competent Motorsport, David August Inc., Brett King Design, Bell Racing Company and the Porsche Club of America.”

Round 3 of the Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup Championship will take place at the Red Bull Ring in Spielberg, Austria from June 20th – 22nd.
