With a new sponsorship and an exciting overseas opportunity, Connor De Phillippi is looking to hit a higher gear in 2013.

The San Clemente native is making his way up the ranks in the 2013 Porsche Carrera Cup Deutschland series, racing with FÖRCH Racing by Lukas Motorsport. He leads all rookie drivers and is eighth of 35 drivers going into the fourth round of the series today at Red Bull Ring in Austria.

It has been a big year already for De Phillippi, 23, who in late 2012 was
awarded a Junior Driver Scholarship by Porsche, which is supplying the bulk of his racing budget and providing coaching on and off the track.

To earn the scholarship, De Phillippi went through two days of extensive interviews and testing and was one of six drivers to advance to the finals in Italy. After two more days on the racetrack and in interviews with Porsche engineers, De Phillippi was one of just two drivers selected for the Deutschland series; the other is Spaniard Alex Riberas Bou.

“The decision was a very exciting one,” Porsche head of racing Hartmut Kristen said in a statement. “The finalists were all on an impressive level. In order to select the two candidates with the greatest potential, our engineers carefully examined every single lap. Both De Phillippi and Bou have the talent necessary to be successful in the sports car scene and to follow in the footsteps of Klaus Bachler and Michael Christensen. Our current Porsche drivers have shown that the Carrera Cup is an excellent platform for a professional international career.”

De Phillippi, who has been racing since age 5 and has notched a topthree finish in the Formula Star Mazda series each of the past three seasons, also inked a sponsorship deal with Roboscan, a Northern California based antivirus Internet security company.

“By (Porsche Motorsport) selecting Connor as a representative, both on and off the racetrack, that’s a clear sign we have partnered with one of America’s great young talents and brand ambassadors,” Roboscan Inc. Vice President Leonard Sangbin Lee said in a statement. “We are very excited about 2013, and we look forward to forging this partnership into one that not only helps our Roboscan Internet Security brand exposure, but helps Connor rise within Porsche and leads to a long and successful sports car career.”
