Porsche Junior Driver De Phillippi Continues To Impress At The Red Bull Ring

Rounds 4 and 5 of the Porsche Carrera Cup Deutschland did not start off as planned for Connor De Phillippi and his FÖRCH Racing by Lukas Motorsport team this past weekend at the Red Bull Ring. They managed to battle the tricky weather conditions that have plagued the first third of the 2013 racing season, but it was a $10 belt that was the culprit of their early troubles.

During the first couple laps of Saturday afternoon’s qualifying session, all was going well until De Phillippi noticed the water temperature to his 450hp Roboscan Internet Security Porsche engine begin to skyrocket. Instead of risking another couple laps for a hotlap and most likely causing catastrophic engine failure, the team made the call to end the session. The early halt to De Phillippi’s qualifying session ended before he had a chance to get the tires up to temperature and put down a quick lap. As a result, De Phillippi was forced to start the first race of the weekend in P20. After the session, De Phillippi commented, “It’s a bit frustrating, because we had pace for about a P7 starting position, but belt failures happen and there is nothing we could have done to prevent it. We know the pace is there and now I’ll just have to dig a little deeper today and move up the field.”

Showing off his rapid development within the Porsche Junior Program and raw talent behind the wheel, De Phillippi passed 7 cars and finished a very respectable P13 during race 1. As a competitor, De Phillippi wasn’t satisfied and felt he could bring home a top 10 finish in race 2. Starting from P21 for the second race meant he would have to pass more than ten Porsche specialists if he wanted to achieve his goal of a top 10 finish.

As race 2 began, it was immediately apparent that De Phillippi had serious pace and was on a mission to get to the front pack. After taking the green flag in P21, De Phillippi put on a passing clinic and overtook 14 competitors, double the amount he passed in race 1. Late in the race, he was up to P6 before Philipp Eng managed to take back the position and De Phillippi ended up with a very impressive P7 finish, his highest result in the first 5 races of the season.

“This weekend at the Red Bull Ring was definitely an up and down weekend for the Roboscan Porsche. It started out rough when one of the cooling belts broke in qualifying, which made us start 20th and 21st for the races. As the weekend progressed, we kept our cool as a team and I had my best result in the Carrera Cup after having to start 21st. I’m very happy with the 7th place result and looking forward to pushing my hardest and continuing to improve each and every race. A huge thank you to Porsche Motorsport, Forch Racing and Roboscan Internet Security for all of their support.”

With 5 rounds completed and 12 more to go, De Phillippi is currently leading the “Rookie of the Year” standings and sits in P9 for the overall Driver’s Championship.
