De Phillippi Gains Invaluable Experience After First Go Around Nurburgring

With no prior race experience around the Nurburgring GP circuit, Connor De Phillippi and his Lukas Motorsport team continued to mesh and improve their Porsche GT3 Cup car for the 12th & 13th rounds of the Porsche Carrera Cup Germany.

SAN CLEMENTE, Calif. — San Clemente, CA — Nurburgring has always been a track known for its fickle weather. Luckily for all, rounds 10 & 11 of the Porsche Carrera Cup Deutschland were held in 80 degree weather, similar to De Phillippi’s hometown of San Clemente, CA. As hot as the weather was, the temperatures were even higher on the track for the 33 drivers who tackled the 3.6km circuit.

In race 1, nearly a quarter of the field had their races end due to on track incidents. De Phillippi was able to steer clear of these incidents and after the 17 lap sprint race, he secured a P7 finish, just ahead of fellow Porsche Junior driver and 2013 Supercup winner, Michael Christensen.

For race 2, De Phillippi had his work cut out for him. After a difficult Q2, he was gridded in the P13 starting position. The team was confident in their ability to move up the field for another top 10 finish, however, this was not to be. On lap 7 of the 23 lap race, De Phillippi locked up his brakes going into turn 1 and flat spotted a front tire. This created a massive vibration in the chassis and excessive understeer — all of which continued to get worse over the final two-thirds of the race. From that point on, it was a struggle to keep his position and the objective became one of salvaging as many points as possible for the team and driver championship standings. When all was said and done, P12 was the best that could be done.

Following the conclusion of round 11, De Phillippi commented, “Nurburgring was a pretty up and down weekend. The first part of qualifying went well for race 1, but I made a mistake in Q2, which made Sunday a difficult race for us. Saturday was another solid result for us, but on Sunday our race was a struggle with a flat spot that was from a mistake of my own. Overall, the weekend was another step forward and I learned from all of the things I did right and wrong. Thank you to Roboscan Internet Security, Porsche Motorsport and my team for continuing to stand behind me with their support.”

De Phillippi continues to maintain his lead in the Rookie of the Year Championship and P9 position in the overall Driver’s Championship.
