With two rounds left in the 2013 Porsche Carrera Cup Deutschland Championship, San Clemente native Connor De Phillippi is leading the way in the Rookie of the Year standings, with a gap of 22 points separating him and his nearest competitor.

De Phillippi finished fourth in his Porsche GT3 in round 14 and eighth in round 15, both at Circuit Park Zandvoort in the Netherlands, on Sept. 29 to rack up valuable points for his team, FORCH Racing by Lukas Motorsports, and his bid for the top rookie honors.

“The weekend went quite well for us,” De Phillippi, who is sponsored by Roboscan Internet Security, said in comments posted on “We brought home our best result of the season, and I can taste the podium. Some great battles in both races made the weekend a tough one, but I feel we made another big step forward.”

De Phillippi was locked in a battle with eventual third-place finisher Philipp Eng for virtually the entire race in round 14, but every move De Phillippi made to pass was successfully blocked by Eng. In the end, there was a gap of just 0.5 seconds between Eng and the sixth-place finisher, as De Phillippi missed a trip to the podium by just 0.07 seconds.

Starting in the ninth spot for round 15, De Phillippi wasn’t able to make up much ground in another very tight race.

De Phillippi, 20, who was awarded a Junior Driver Scholarship by Porsche in 2012, is in ninth place overall with 110 points, 14 behind his teammate Robert Lukas. Kevin Estre of France is in the lead with 211 points.

The last two rounds of the cup series will be held at the 4.574-kilometer Hockenheimring in Hockenheim, Baden-Württemberg, Germany, from Oct. 18-20.

“I cannot thank everyone enough for working so hard this year for me, and I am already looking forward to Hockenheim,” De Phillippi said.
