Top-5 for De Phillippi at the 24 Hours of Spa

The 69th edition of the Total 24 Hours of Spa kept all its promises and will sit in the history books as one of the world’s most difficult GT3 races in endurance racing history. With five cars and four different manufacturers all within a 70 second time gap, it shows how brutally tough the competition was for 24 hours.

The Audi Sport Team WRT car #2 driven by Connor De Phillippi, Christopher Mies and Frederic Vervisch was constantly in the top three positions and even led for several hours before the halfway point in the race.

During the mandatory 5-min technical stop at around the 14th hour in the race, the team had a slight hiccup when changing a brake caliper and lost valuable time in the pits. From that point it was an all out sprint race, with De Phillippi and his teammates driving as if it was an all our sprint race to the finish.

As time ticked down the #2 Audi R8 LMS slowly worked its way back into the Top-5 and when the checkered flag flew it was a 5th place finishing position for De Phillippi’s first attempt at the infamous 24 Hours of Spa.

“Of course we all had victory in mind today. We led and fought in the top three positions for the first half of the race, and we go away from this event knowing that we had the speed to stand on top of the podium. I’m pleased to have crossed the line in fifth position and I’m very proud to have been a piece of this team today. The atmosphere was one of the most enjoyable I’ve ever experienced and I look forward to coming back next year with a chance at the overall victory!”
